SAINT MALO – LOUIS BARTHÉLÉMY

SAINT-MALO

Louis-Barthélémy was born in the village of La Moisiais, near Le Minihic on the left bank of the Rance River, in November 1826.

To get to Saint Malo, on the right bank, he crossed the dangerous river by boat at the high point of La Cale de Jouvence. His sister and brother-in-law drowned, however, carried away by the strong current.

His ancestors, shipwrights, worked in the nearby shipyards of Richardais and La Landrais between tours of duty.

First in the lineage to study, he became a long distance captain, and the pride of the family.

Like all sailors, he began by fishing in Newfoundland before taking command of the ships that took him around the world.

From Mexico, which he only passed through, to the Sea of China, where he was shipwrecked, through Egypt and while staying in Burma, his course in life took him back to his native Brittany, where he died in July 1877 as a result of injuries inflicted by Burmese thugs the year before.

He is buried in the small cemetery of Pleurtuit with Rose, his beloved wife.
